When you gamble on sports games, you are often trying to beat the spread, the points difference your bookie has established as the most likely outcome of the game. Often, beating the spread will reward you just as much as winning outright, and it's a pleasant outcome no matter what your winnings are. In poker, you can also look at a sort of spread that exists.
