Poker Pro Admits Multi-Accounting Sin

In the world of online poker to multi-account means to have more than one account at one poker room, and this is considered a very bad thing. To have more than one account means you could be logged in in two open accounts during the same tournament - possibly at the same table - and have access to information that a single account holder would not. Full Tilt Poker pro Brian Townsend recently admitted to - and apologized for - multi-accounting at both that and another poker room...

Czech Association of Poker Clubs Asks for Sport Label

Having poker recognized as an official sport in Czechoslovakia would make the games safer according to the Czech Association of Poker Clubs, which points out that some poker clubs that target tourists are run by the Czech mafia. There are some estimated 60,000 Czechs who play poker, and the CAPC says they will benefit as well if the Finance Ministry would just recognize the game as an official sport. While the poker boom's continued existence has been a matter of debate in some quarters, in some ways things are going exceptionally well for the poker industry; but the attendance at the main event of the 2008 World Poker Tour Legends of Poker isn't one of them. Last year 485 players paid the $10,000 buy-in to play, but this year there were only 373 entrants. When you are sitting at a World Series of Poker final table and look across the felt to see Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Marcel Luske, and Annie Duke staring back at you, it is a foregone conclusion that you are going to have a very long day (or a very short one). Fortunately for Sebastian Ruthenberg he came into this final table with a substantial chip lead, and some carry over momentum from the previous day's play.

Economy a Factor for WSOP

The World Series of Poker underwent a boom around the time that the online poker rooms were getting their foothold on the imagination of the world's poker players. These rooms offered a chance to win a $10k seat into the WSOP that some players wouldn't otherwise have, and were responsible for pushing thousands of players into the WSOP in years past. Last year attendance dropped due to many of those rooms pulling back from US players...

It is now before the Senate Appropriations Committee, where the final vote will be taken before it comes before the Governor to be signed into law...

33 Arrested in Poker Raid

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported that Tuesday night a building was raided by Shelbyville authorities, who found four poker tables in operation, running what appeared to be an illegal poker tournament with a $1k buy in. The raid came on the tail end of a four month investigation and resulted in the arrest of 33 people and seizure of nearly fifty thousand dollars. The $48k seized was generated at least in part by each player putting up their buy in, a portion of which was going to the house in every hand, what casinos call a "rake." Momentum Again

People do silly things in the name of momentum. Baseball players will turn their hats inside out, and wear them that way in order to keep a rally going. Hockey players will shun razors and clean underwear if their playoff momentum carries them from one opponent to another, poker players, well, should just keep playing. Like it or not, momentum is a very real phenomenon that seems to follow a special set of rules of its own.

The Player of the Year at the World Series of Poker for 2008 is 3rd place finisher in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event Erick Lindgren. Phil Hellmuth Misses 12th WSOP Victory Opportunity

The world leader in World Series of Poker bracelets made a run at pulling even further ahead of his closest competitors but came up short by two spots. Phil Hellmuth, owner of 11 WSOP bracelets, nearly got his 12th during Day Three of Event 51, $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. Instead he managed a nice third place position, and $93k that likely means little to the poker superstar in comparison to the prestige another WSOP bracelet would have meant...

Investors Respond to World Poker Tour Announcement

When the World Poker Tour first started, CEO and President Steve Lipscomb knew they would not make money right away - first they had to get the name out, get people to fall in love with their format, and then the profits would come. It's a publicly traded company, and the recent announcement that the WPT has lost money this year hit the investors hard, and the value of the WPT stock dropped more than twenty percent as confidence dropped...

A Bad Time for a Bluff

Let's say you have just concluded the post flop betting and the turn is looming. There are still four people hanging around in the hand. This is not the time to test your bluffing skills. In the later betting rounds bluffing into multi-way pot is generally a worthless endeavor. You are not going to scare everyone out of the pot with your bluff, and whoever has the best hand will probably be reluctant to give up their cards.

2008 WSOP Event 53 Winner Matt Graham

Event 53 was the last under card event before the insanity of the World Series of Poker Main Event took center stage. Anybody who thought that the last day of this event would just wilt under the shadow of the WSOP signature competition and that this would be just another day at the office would be completely wrong. The final day of this event was perhaps one of the most entertaining of the entire World Series of Poker season.

2008 WSOP Diary, July 7: A Day Off at the WSOP

Today was a rare off day at the World Series of Poker so most of the players spent the day taking a well deserved breather while preparing for the next stage of the Main Event. For the most part people were still buzzing about hijinx from Day 1d. For example, General George Patton and the hero of Stalingrad, General Zhukov, were probably spinning like centrifuges in their graves when Phil Hellmuth showed up dressed as an 11 star General.

Guessing

There have been literally billions of words written on the topic of putting somebody on a hand - most of those words have been written by Daniel Negreanu, but that is beside the point. Putting somebody on a hand is both a skill and an art. Some folks can do it to the point where they look like they are almost psychic. Let's be honest though, there are no absolutes when it comes to putting someone on a hand.

Resize Your Game at Online Poker Room

The update will allow players at Bodog Poker to resize the window that holds their game table. This will, in turn, allow for more games to fit on a computer screen - an important thing if you are a multi game player...

New Online Poker Bill Upsetting to Players

When the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) went into effect in 2006 it upset the online poker community, but it did not expressly label online poker as illegal. A new bill, HR 6663, called Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Clarification and Implementation Act (UIGECIA), which was described as a positive element as it would clarify the UIGEA, is upsetting poker players and the Poker Players Alliance. It turns out that the UIGECIA wants to specify sports betting online as illegal, and by doing so implicate online poker as illegal. 2008 WSOP Diary, Main Event Day 1D: Dylan Linde and Steve Austin Are Chip Leaders

So what do Dylan Linde and Steve Austin not have in common with Jennifer Tilly? Well if you include a Y chromosome and a penchant for really cute shoes, the list is probably pretty big. Specifically though, Dylan and Steve are still alive in the Main Event and Jennifer Tilly along with Ms. Duke have been eliminated. Not only are Dylan Linde and Steve Austin still hanging around in the tournament, but they are the Day 1D chip leaders.

State Wants $40k from Poker Playing Lawyer

Last year poker playing Westmoreland, Pennsylvania lawyer, Larry Burns, was charged with organizing a poker game that was busted by the police, and now the state is coming after Burns for some cash. Specifically they are interested in confiscating $40k that they found during the poker event, including over $30k that was donated to the Westmoreland County Fire Department, which was hosting the event. 2008 WSOP Event 44 Winner Max Greenwood

The final table of Event #44 was unusual in one particular respect: none of the players seated around the piece of felt covered furniture had ever won a World Series of Poker bracelet before. Something just looks odd when you see nine players competing for one of the sport's most prestigious prizes and none of them has been to the promised land before. It's sort of like watching nine guys who have never had a date chasing after Heidi Klum.

A Wing, Some Cards, and Courage

There have been almost fifty final tables played this year at the World Series of Poker with, in most cases, 9 players going into the final day of play. Of those 9 players, every one of them will go all in at some point in time, and in the end, 8 of them will wind up on the wrong end of exchange. There is nothing profound in that statement: it is just a statement of fact regarding the ways of tournament poker.

2008 WSOP Diary, June 23: Two More People Accept Championship Bracelets

Davidi Kitai won Event #38 ($2,000 Pot Limit Holdem). The final table didn't seem to sport any players who would be gracing the cover of Bluff magazine anytime soon, but despite the lack of a big name player, the entire field was players of a good repute as solid professionals. This made just about everything a dog fight, including the final table. Davidi had to struggle against Chris Bell for over five hours before finally claiming the bracelet as his own.
