WPT Invitational Sponsorship

The World Poker Tour Celebrity Invitational is one of the most popular WPT events of the year, and fans will find another reason to enjoy the event now that it has become sponsored by Who's Your Daddy, Inc. The company has become the "official energy drink sponsor" of the WPT event, which will be held from March 1st through March 3rd. The event will take place at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, and invited pro poker players and Hollywood celebrities will show up to play world class poker...

Trapped

Any woman who has ever had the misfortune of hooking up with somebody at a Star Trek convention knows how disappointing something can be when it starts off looking promising, but just explodes before it even gets off the launch pad. This sort of premature lift off also seems to plague less experienced poker players who let their excitement get the better of them when the hole cards show promise. These types of hands are referred to as trap hands. They are to the poker player what acme products are to Wile E. Coyote.

Dress for Success

The unusual fashion sense that seems to be inherent to the sport of poker is a well traveled subject and often a source of fun for those who can attractively accessorize any outfit with their eyes closed. But in the particular case of professional poker bad fashion is often functional. A lot of players are keenly aware of their tells. They are even more aware of the ones they can't really get full control of, so the best way to deal with eyes that subconsciously get big when you have the nuts is to cover them with dark glasses.

Kicked

If you are in a situation where you have been dealt an unsuited King/7, and the flop delivers a K/4/2, under most circumstances you would be sitting pretty, and you can internally give yourself a little high five. Of course if one of your opponents has a cat that ate the canary smile on their face, and begins acting like a bully during the next betting round, this means one of two things. They are either trying to use the King on the board to facilitate a bluff or they are holding one of the three remaining Kings.

Be a Poker Mentor

You have put in countless hours playing poker online or at the casino, and by now you know a thing or two about the game. You know when to slow play and when to shove all in, you know how to spot a fish and what kind of bait to use to get paid off, and you know how to not go broke. You may not be the best or even close to where you want to be, but you certainly know enough to take a new player under your wing - become a poker mentor, and learn by teaching.

This Is Not Your Father's Communism

Anybody who has been to Moscow over the past few years will see that its vibe is very similar to the one that is felt in cities like London, Paris, New York, and Chicago. The problem is that much of the western media seems to be ignorant of the fact that Russia is a very Cosmopolitan nation, and one would wonder if the New York Times editorial staff is even aware that Stalin is dead. Thankfully, Titan Poker is aware of the dramatic changes in this historic nation since the late 80's and will be sending players there for the first time to compete in the White Night Millions.

Heartland Poker Tour Gets Support

Online poker instructional website CardRunners has recently announced their new partnership with one of the fastest growing poker tours in the world, the Heartland Poker Tour (HPT). CardRunners, which is now the official poker training website of the HPT, has been looking for new markets in which to expand, and the exposure provided by the HPT is a natural fit. The HPT takes professional card playing across the country into towns that may not have access to tournaments like the World Poker Tour or the World Series of Poker...

Canadian Judge Drops Illegal Poker

Poker players arrested in a sting operation last May in Canada have been complaining that the persecution against them is a waste of time, and it appears that a Manitoba judge is inclined to agree. Provincial court Judge Rocky Pollock, when ruling on two of the 57 poker players' cases, discharged all criminal charges against Neil Faderson and Rellen Orcullo, and urged the crowd at large to contact the MP if they, too, think the laws regarding the legality of poker in Canada should be changed. Other players have gotten off after taking classes through the Salvation Army offering positive lifestyle options. The Unforgetable Courtney

As everyone for whom the film "Die Hard" was a religious experience knows, AskMen.com released their list of the 10 hottest women in the sport of poker. And Courtney Friel showed up as number three on the list of poker hotties despite the fact that she has not been in the same room with a poker table and a television camera for about two years.

Going Nuts

We have all seen it: someone delivers a bad beat to Phil Hellmuth, and he calls them a donkey then proceeds to throw a tantrum that would embarrass a two-year-old. During his tirade he usually berates his competition for daring to go all the way to the river with inferior cards. Not folding when you should really sends Phil over the edge. Of course after having a good cry, he generally comes back and breaks the person who has upset him to the point of going tilt.

WPT Hires Magician

The pro poker player known as "the Magician" has been hired to work some magic for the World Poker Tour. Antonio Esfandiari, who was a pro magician before he became a pro poker player, was hired once before by the WPT to perform magic with cards and coins, and has been hired once more to perform a different kind of magic. Esfandiari will be the official spokesman for the "WPT Poker-Made Millionaire" segment of the company, representing the 84 players who have earned a million dollars or more on the World Poker Tour, which routinely pays out at least a million dollars to winners of their various events. Hundreds of Thousands Exchange Hands at Online Table

Online poker rooms are sometimes where pro players and amateur high rollers log on to toss money around in very large amounts, as witnesses to one match at Full Tilt Poker can attest to. Phil Ivey, known as the "Tiger Woods of poker", was the pro while another player, a mystery man known as seda1, took on the role of high stakes amateur. Seda1 lost $600k to Ivey in one match, but according to reports made up some ground in a follow up session at a "Deathmatch" table...

Foundations

The early stages of any Texas Holdem game are the time of establishing foundations to carry you through later hands and to the end of the game. Choices you make even in the first hand effect the choices you and the other players will make down the line. The game doesn't take any time to become important: it's important from the very get go.

WSOP Qualifiers Popular at Wheeling Island

The Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack recently held their first satellite qualifier for the upcoming World Series of Poker, and according to recent reports it was a big success. Hundreds of poker players lined up to compete in the event, which offered a prize package to the 2008 World Series of Poker main event worth $10,000. The 330 seat tournament was sold out hours after the tickets went on sale...

Getting Wet for Poker

We all love poker, and charity poker events are a great way to get much needed funding for organizations that exist to make the world a better place, but sometimes in an attempt to be creative they cross that fine line between something that is really cool, and the sort of event that makes about as much sense as an old episode of Twin Peaks.

New California Study on Poker Legality

A new bill has been introduced by California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine that will take a second look at ways that online poker could be played legally in the state. The California Gambling Control Commission (CGCC) would be doing the research, and the bill would require the CGCC to determine how laws could best be applied to the state. In the end, the report would give a complete picture of online poker, California and the law, and then lawmakers would be able to determine how best to proceed in the future. AskMen.Com Names Top 10 Poker Hotties

For a long time the hottest chick in the world of professional poker was Todd Brunson. This isn't because there was something wrong with his Y chromosome, or because he had the sort of personal leanings that would have made him a good hair dresser. Todd earned this distinction simply because he was the only one at the table who could fill out a 38c bra. That was then, but today the problem is that there are so many attractive women in the sport of poker that trying to separate one from the herd is like two female teens arguing over if Jude Law's nose is more beautiful than Leonardo DiCaprio's eyes. Thankfully, AskMen.com was here to help us out.

Preflop Hand Strength in a Heads Up Situation

Anybody who is an aficionado of Ron Jeremy's work knows that how you play with a group is a whole lot different than how you deal with somebody one on one. This is also true in the game of poker. While most of us are used to playing against 6-10 opponents, your approach to the game must change when you are playing heads up against a single opponent.

Getting Naked

Some things are just unsexy. Larry the Cable Guy having marital relations with egg salad sandwich is unsexy; ISO 9000 is unsexy; Hillary Clinton trying to win votes with cleavage is almost unthinkably unsexy, but in a universe of things that are designed to club the human libido into submission, there is hope. Today, hope comes in the tiny form of perhaps poker's more scandalous figure: Ms. Jennifer "Jennicide" Leigh.

Bluffing for Control

Poker is unique in many ways. Unlike reporting taxes to the IRS or anything having to do with the opposite sex, lying is actually encouraged in poker. They use the cute little term "bluffing" but it is the same thing. Bluffing against a field of players is one thing, but it is completely different when you are in a heads up game and you're the sole focus of your opponent.

First Fully Auto Poker Tourney

The PokerPro tables that are run by a computer AI have been making a splash in a number of casinos around the world, but this February 12th the first real test of the system had the curious keeping a close eye out. At the Casino de Montréal the first ever fully automated multi-table poker tournament was held. The event, which hosted 240 players, was run with a staff of four...

Online Poker Room to Host $2 Million Guaranteed Tournament

This event will begin on March 2nd, and will have $100,000 just for the final table finishers...

New Faces in Women's Poker

Poker continues to grow as a game and a sport, and women everywhere are getting more into the game. With the advent of the Ladies Tour portion of the World Poker Tour and other similar events, it is no wonder that women are getting more attention than ever in the game. Players like Clonie Gown, Jennifer Harman and Annie Duke have been joined by fresh faces like Isabelle Mercier, Erica Schoenberg and Evelyn Ng...

Keep Your Money Out of It

When you are figuring out your pot odds leading up to a decision in a poker hand, how do you do it? Do you figure out what your odds of winning the hand are by counting outs, then figure out how much money is in the pot and how much you are being asked to call, and then compare the two calculations? If you are, you are doing it right, but if you add a third step of factoring in what you have already invested, you are heading down the wrong path.

Titan Poker Ups Prize Pools

European friendly poker room Titan Poker has announced recently that they are adding more money to their already on the rise prize pools for online players. After the start of the new year, Titan had let it be known that they would be guaranteeing $10 million in prize pools per month, and now that number has gone up to more than $12 million. The exact figure, $12,500,000, includes their new big dollar tournament, a $2 million guaranteed event, scheduled to take place this March...

Heartland Poker Tour Doing Well

In 2005, Todd Anderson and Greg Lang launched the Heartland Poker Tour, which by all accounts is doing very well indeed. Billed as a poker tour for the average player, the HPT has continued to grow year after year, with more than eight million dollars being paid out to tourney winners so far. Six states ranging from Colorado to New York host the HPT, where players can play for cash prizes as well as tickets to bigger events...

Shooting Off More Than Your Mouth

People should always think twice when they are considering cheating. This is a good advice for how one approaches the game of poker and life in general. For example, John Wayne Bobbitt was punished for his romantic wanderings by having his wife play "this little piggy went to market" with his favorite appendage. Bill Clinton is repaying his Karmic debt to his wife by being an active, yet buffoonish, player in what is turning out to be one of the biggest upsets in American political history. Both of these pale in comparison to how Duane Demaris Crittenden II of Marion County, Florida dealt with three people that he believed were cheating him at poker.

Florida Poker Room Bad Beat Jackpot

In poker parlance a "bad beat" is when a poker player starts out with a winning hand but then is outdrawn by a player with an inferior hand, and it usually coincides with a loss of a great deal of money. In one Florida poker room, however, a bad beat could mean a lucky day for one player. The Bad Beat Jackpot has been growing since the start of the year and is predicted to hit over $200k at the Palm Kennel Club's Poker Room in Palm Beach...

Tag Team Poker

You have seen it in "Pro" wrestling, and marveled at the skill in which one wrestler sets up his opponent, tags in his partner, and steps back as his partner delivers the coup de grace. Well, here is your chance to do the same thing, although you don't have to wear a uni-tard to do it, nor be able to bench press a Buick. It's called Tag Team Poker, and it is starting to catch on at live major poker events - so no reason you can't do it at home.

US State Approves "Church Poker"

In South Carolina churches are a big deal, which is not surprising for a US state that is commonly referred to as part of the "Bible Belt." What may be surprising is that poker has been given the green light as long as the cards are being dealt by a church. The recent shift in legislation is away from a 200 year old law that prohibits card games, and will allow churches and other non profit groups to host poker games to raise funds. The upshot of the law means that home games remain illegal, but games of Texas Holdem are fine if played during a church fundraiser. The winners in these qualifiers could pick up a $21,000 prize package to get them into the event, which will be a televised tournament...

Playing with a Middle Stack

Tournament poker is a marathon, not a sprint. The end result of this race is to be the last person standing with all chips at the end of the day, and how we get there is the question. There are as many different approaches to a tournament as there are personalities playing the game. While nobody is going to say no if offered the chip lead in a tournament, there are benefits of playing with a mid-sized stack in front of you.

Going All In

Going all in was at one time the last act of a desperate player. It was their final defense against the possibility of elimination in a tournament. Like a frilled lizard displaying its brightly colored neck decoration in order to warn opponents off, the all in bet was used to put an aggressor on notice that if they decide to continue with their hand, it might cost them dearly. As the internet became an incubator for more aggressive players, we started to see the all in bet used more and more as an offensive weapon.

Former Maricopa County Judge Challenges the Legal System

Usually when somebody challenges the legal system in regards to the game of poker, the person being belligerent generally has the sort of experience with the law that O.J. Simpson would appreciate. Rarely do you see anybody on the handle end of the gavel causing legal waves over the game of poker, but that is exactly what is happening in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Farsight

There are those people who are (supposedly) blessed with the ability to see into the future. That Nostradamus fellow is the most famous of these prophets or psychics or whatever, but history is filled with those who would claim they had the ability to see through the veil of time. When you play poker, you often find yourself wishing you had such a power. The ability to see into the future would practically guarantee your success in any game at any table.

Don't Speak O.J.

Not every spokesperson is good for every industry and product. For example, nobody is going to hire Paris Hilton to promote the cause of assistance among the randy little high school population. It is also a near certainty that we will never see Flavor Flav hawking the sort of products that make the claim that they can bring about massive bulk, rock hard abs, and glutes you bounce a quarter (or anything else) off of. So when ex-running back, misogynist, and multiple murderer, O.J. Simpson speaks about poker, it is like throwing the entire sport under the bus.

Court Rulling Says Poker All Luck

There is not a sinlge pro poker player that would tell you that the game of poker does not involve luck - but the majority of them would tell you that luck is only a small part of what goes on at the felt and online. In a landmark ruling a Court of Appeal has recently ruled the opposite - that the game of poker depends more on luck than skill. Snaresbrook Crown Court found private club owner Derek Kelly guilty of breaking gambling laws, but Kelly tried to circumvent them by pointing out that skill based poker does not apply...

Early Aggression in a Tournament

Most of us know that the blinds escalate during tournament play. The reason for this is twofold: A) it moves the game along faster and B) high blinds are like a tax on timid players. Seeing as we all know what Benjamin Franklin had to say about death and taxes, timid players rarely survive as they are blinded to death while waiting for the perfect hand to bail them out.

Revenues Up for Poker Firm

One of the largest online poker software and online casino firms in the world has recently reported that their revenues are up. Playtech, based in the UK and run by online poker experts based out of Israel, reported that the firm's revenue rose 101 percent to more than $32 million. This figure takes into account the absence of US revenues, which were discounted thanks to that country's hard line stance against online poker and online gambling in general...

I'm Out of Here

There are some things that violate unwritten social mores in ways that would convince even the sedate Ms. Manners to administer a savage beating. These violations of good behavior are usually obvious. For example, emphasizing the fact that your mother-in-law's roast was a tad overdone by comparing it to leather or packing foam is probably not something that a polite person should do. With that said, one of the most well known breaches of etiquette in the world of poker is to leave the table when you are way ahead on cash.

Poker Room Acquires Skin

In the online poker world there are poker rooms and then there are poker rooms that are skins. The skins are essentially copies of major poker rooms that operate under a different name and have their own customer base, but share tables and promotions with the actual poker room. One such poker room that has skins is Absolute Poker, which has recently acquired Vegas 24/7, making it one of its poker skins...

Poker Machines May Get Boot in Australia

Suburban Australia may see a dearth of poker machines over the next ten years if a new federal tax plan, which some have labeled as radical, goes through. The anti poker legislation will be introduced into Parliament by Family First Senator Steve Fielding, and if passed, there will be a gradual tax increase imposed on poker machines found in pubs and other locations outside of racetracks and casinos. These taxes would be held in a trust fund that could be tapped by community groups and sporting groups...

Black Robes Call Poker a Game of Chance

There has been a long and ongoing debate about whether or not poker is a game of skill or chance. The problem with this particular discussion is that ones making the decisions are judges who would probably consider a rousing game of "Go Fish" the height of card game evolution. If it was not for the fact that their decisions carry a considerable amount of weight, letting a bunch of guys in black robes and powder wigs chime in on the game of poker would be almost comical.

Defending Your Blind from a Thief

Nobody has a good hand all the time. Anybody who does is probably getting the cards from up their sleeve. So when the player to your right seems to always be stealing the pot when you're in the big blind, you can either assume he gets the best hand in the world whenever he is in that particular position or he is bluffing most of the time.

Policing the Table

Not many people like the police. Sure, they keep us safe from crime, and they're the ones who are risking to get shot by someone crazy, so they have a pretty tough and thankless job, but they're also the guys who pull us over when we're in a hurry and bust up our highschool parties. Police make you feel uneasy. And that's where policing the table comes in.

Tax Dollars Are Work

You have to be amazed at what the American Government spends its money on. In a time when they are paying for two wars, trying to figure out how to get money to people suffering from the sub-prime mortgage crisis, paying to rebuild the city of New Orleans, and occasionally having to raid the Social Security fund to pay for Ted Kennedy's bar tab, they have somehow found the cash to sponsor a study about the gambling habits of teenagers.

New Poker Book Hits Close to Home

Hat and Eyeglasses is both the title of the new poker book by a freelance poker writer and what she said she had left after succumbing to a gambling problem - just her hat and eyeglasses. Martha Frankel, a freelance writer for Details and other magazines, grew up with gambling in the home and joined a poker game online to learn what the up and coming scene was about in order to write a story. She ended up getting hooked on the game and neglecting her work, friends and family until she connected with Gamblers Anonymous...

Student Online Poker Players on the Rise

According to a new report furnished by the Education Department's Youth Gambling Research Project, the number of students playing online poker is on the rise. The number of players who gamble every week between the ages of 12 to 17 has gone down, but the overall average of students playing card games for money has gone up. This does include live poker games, likely being played at home or elsewhere, as opposed to online play, where there are safety measures in place to reduce the odds of underage gambling. To get the title Lelivre had to beat online poker players form around the world in a three month long competition...

Don't Go Pro!

There are just some professional sports that normal people simply will never be able to play. Poker is not one of them. Part of the allure of poker is that guys and gals of modest proportions can compete on the same playing field with players whose biceps have their own gravitational field. So what are we to think when poker's newest millionaire tells us that casual players should not try to go pro?

Swedish Tax Board Eyes Poker Players for Tax Evasion

When Skatteverket, the tax board in Sweden, announced that online poker sites were going to be targeted for tax evasion crimes, the blogosphere said not to worry: individual poker players would not be harassed. It turns out they were wrong to think so, as a recent report suggests that nearly fifty online poker playing individuals have been targeted by Skatteverket for tax evasion suspicions. This would represent nearly €45 million in unclaimed income, and more than ten percent of that belonging to individuals as opposed to poker companies. Crowning a Canadian King - Or Queen

If most people in Canada were asked who rules the country, most of them would probably answer Wayne Gretzky. The ones who don't immediately acknowledge the hockey great as the nation's leader would probably name either Bob or Doug McKenzie as the governmental, emotional, and spiritual leader of the frigid North American country. Regardless of who really is in charge in Ottawa, HeadsUp Entertainment International Inc. plans on figuring out who is the Canadian King or Queen of Holdem.

Taming Monster Hands

A monster hand can be a dangerous thing. They are called monsters because they typically win, and when played properly, win big. In this way they are monsters to the opponent, but they can be monsters to the player who holds them as well. If things go bad with your monster, then, at the worst, you could actually lose all your chips, and at best, you could wind up with less than what you should have gotten for the hand.

Being Put on a Hand

Even intermediate players make really stupid mistakes. One of the most common errors that players make is committing the sin of being overly self involved. There is nothing wrong with scanning the faces of the players around you, trying to put them on a hand. Unfortunately, people often get so lost in this activity that they forget that there are a lot of people at the table doing the exact same thing to them.

When Raises Raise Eyebrows

We all know that type of person who considers themselves a "lone wolf". They gravitate towards leather clothing, Molly Hatchet CDs, and the type of monologues that may as well have been ripped from a Clint Eastwood, "Man with No Name" film. Though annoying, most people would rather deal with a lone wolf than with a couple of people who take the "wolf pack" approach to the game of poker.

Stealing

For those who are not aware of what stealing a pot is, this is the practice of bluffing before the flop and getting everyone to fold. Basically you win the blinds and the initial bets by default and all it cost you was the effort involved to lie in a credible manner. Now that you know what stealing the pot is, the question is when is the best time to do this?

The Risks of Developing Value

Unless you're holding a truly killer hand, you are often spending your time at the poker table trying to develop value. You want a strong hand because a strong hand can win a big pot - the stronger your hand, the bigger the pot you can win. In draw poker, you have a semblance of control over how your hand develops with your ability to flip cards, but this brings with it some risks.

Don't Blame the WPT

Recently there has been some media carping about the World Poker Tour's move from the Travel Channel to the GSN network. The problem with the move to GSN is that it actually will cost a lot of people money. Most basic cable packages do not include this particular offering. This means that a segment of the WPT fan base will not be able to follow the show to GSN without bumping up their cable costs by at least nine dollars per month.

EU Hunts Member Nations' Poker Plans

German and Swedish poker players are facing an uncertain future in terms of online poker play now that the European Union has come after their governments for what is essentially a breach of contract. Sweden has a state run company, Svenska Spel, that has a monopoly on all online poker in the nation, while Germany has restrictions on online poker that are similar to those found in the United States with their Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. The EU holds that member nations cannot interfere with the businesses of other nations and defines Germany and Sweden's rules as doing such.
